Garcinia Cambogia benefits have been reported to include weight loss, appetite suppression, and improved mood. However, the scientific evidence is mixed, and much of the hype relates to anecdotal reports. In this article, we look at the science behind some of the health benefits in order to separate fact from fiction.
Garcinia Cambogia Preparation & Cooking
In its natural form, Garcinia Cambogia is a tropical fruit that’s found in Southeast Asia, India, and Africa. It thrives in the moist forests and is sometimes referred to as the Brindleberry, Malabar Tamarind, or Kudam Poli.
The Garcinia Cambogia fruit looks like a small pumpkin and can be green or pale yellow in color. It has a thin skin and vertical lobes, ranging from the size of an orange to a grapefruit. During the process of drying, curing, and storing, the color usually changes to dark brown or black.
The fruit is mainly used in cooking, specifically in the preparation of curries. The fruit rind and extracts have a ‘sour’ flavor and are used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine to aid digestion. It is also used commercially to prepare fish curry, especially in Sri Lanka and South India.
Garcinia Cambogia Benefits for Medical Use
In addition to culinary preparation, Garcinia Cambogia benefits extend to medicinal use too. The rind of Garcinia Cambogia contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that has been clinically proven to aid weight loss. Dr. Oz has recommended Garcinia Cambogia extract as a natural way for people to lose weight. It’s since proved to be particularly popular since there’s little effort involved and no requirement to change the diet.
Sales of Garcinia Cambogia have increased dramatically and it’s now available in the form of weight loss pills, supplements, and patches. People who have struggled for years to lose weight are drawn to the product due its natural medicinal properties and ease of use.
As its popularity grew and media attention increased, the scientific community took more interest. Medical institutes began to research whether the reported Garcinia Cambogia benefits related to weight loss were actually true. Its consumption in Asia had been for culinary purposes rather than weight loss, so there was little research to go on initially.
Garcinia Cambogia Benefits - Summary of the Research
Research studies have provided mixed results relating to Garcinia Cambogia benefits. Although weight loss is the most frequently studied health benefit, others include:
- Loss of appetite or desire to eat less than usual
- Reduced cravings for unhealthy foods
- Positive mood (feeling happier, energetic, etc.)
- Increase in concentration and energy
- Stabilized sugar levels
- Improved bowel movements
- Reduced joint pains
- Improved cholesterol levels
Not all of these health benefits have been proven in scientific studies, but some have produced promising results. Let’s take a look at the research in more detail.
1. Weight Loss
The active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia is thought to be hydroxycitric acid (HCA). This has been found to block an enzyme that’s involved in fat storage and is believed to be the mechanism behind reported weight loss. However, human studies have failed to prove conclusively that Garcinia Cambogia influences weight loss. Fat loss did occur in several studies, but the results were quite variable which made them unreliable. Where fat loss did occur, it usually equated to approximately one or two pounds. Despite this, anecdotal evidence is overwhelmingly positive. Many people have seen substantial weight loss whilst taking Garcinia Cambogia weight loss supplements over the long term (check out these 5* reviews), so more research is needed to understand why.
2. Reducing Appetite
Studies have also suggested that Garcinia Cambogia benefits may include lowering the appetite. It’s thought to do this by increasing the production of serotonin in the brain, which is associated with happy and calm feelings. This, in turn, reduces the likelihood of overeating due to negative emotions, so people report feeling fewer cravings. However, this isn’t the case for everyone, and some of the studies have produced unreliable results.
3. Lower Cholesterol
Several studies showed an association between Garcinia Cambogia and positive cholesterol changes. It appears to be effective in lowering blood serum cholesterol levels and increasing the amount of good cholesterol too. However, it may not be safe for individuals who are already taking cholesterol medication so is more suitable as a preventative treatment to stop cholesterol levels from becoming unbalanced.
4. Stabilizes Blood Sugar
Research into the effects of Garcinia Cambogia on blood sugar has also produced some positive results. Studies have shown that it can help to control blood sugar levels by improving the intake of glucose by cells. However, it’s always best to seek medical advice on the management of blood sugar, so always speak to a health professional beforehand.
Garcinia Cambogia Side Effects
It wouldn’t be right to review the Garcinia Cambogia benefits without looking at the side-effects too. After all, every coin has two sides. Although Garcinia Cambogia extract is made from natural ingredients, it can still have some unwanted effects on our health. These include liver damage, dizziness, and digestive problems. One way to avoid the digestive side effects is to take Garcinia Cambogia supplements in topical patch form instead. The extract is absorbed directly by the skin instead of going through the digestive system, helping you to lose weight stress-free. It’s straightforward and easy to use - simply apply the patch daily for best results.
