The fruit is mainly used in cooking, specifically in the preparation of curries. The fruit rind and extracts have a ‘sour’ flavor and are used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine to aid digestion. It is also used commercially to prepare fish curry, especially in Sri Lanka and South India.
Garcinia Cambogia Benefits for Medical Use
In addition to culinary preparation, Garcinia Cambogia benefits extend to medicinal use too. The rind of Garcinia Cambogia contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that has been clinically proven to aid weight loss. Dr. Oz has recommended Garcinia Cambogia extract as a natural way for people to lose weight. It’s since proved to be particularly popular since there’s little effort involved and no requirement to change the diet.
Sales of Garcinia Cambogia have increased dramatically and it’s now available in the form of weight loss pills, supplements, and patches. People who have struggled for years to lose weight are drawn to the product due its natural medicinal properties and ease of use.
As its popularity grew and media attention increased, the scientific community took more interest. Medical institutes began to research whether the reported Garcinia Cambogia benefits related to weight loss were actually true. Its consumption in Asia had been for culinary purposes rather than weight loss, so there was little research to go on initially.
Garcinia Cambogia Benefits - Summary of the Research
Research studies have provided mixed results relating to Garcinia Cambogia benefits. Although weight loss is the most frequently studied health benefit, others include:
- Loss of appetite or desire to eat less than usual
- Reduced cravings for unhealthy foods

Several studies showed an association between Garcinia Cambogia and positive cholesterol changes. However, it may not be safe for individuals who are already taking cholesterol medication so is more suitable as a preventative treatment to stop cholesterol levels from becoming unbalanced.

Research into the effects of Garcinia Cambogia on blood sugar has also produced some positive results. Studies have shown that it can help to control blood sugar levels by improving the intake of glucose by cells.
